Welcome!
Our regular visitors know that the "Extras" menu is (and has been) a developing experiment. The title "Canned Films Festival" will likely not remain. We needed a graphic/header for this section, and that was the best I could do on short notice. D'oh! I'm waiting for a better title/suggestion to arrive from from a couple of friends who were asked to participate. A comprehensive outlined introduction (to better explain our intentions here) is on the way as well...

s00pa'-d00pa'! Ardge is tha' man!

     I asked our Message Board "ArdgeMinistrator" for his assistance and he so graciously accepted the invitation. It's not easy to find the time, even though this web-stuff can be lots-0-fun. RJ's a busy cat too, and we ALL appreciate anything he has to offer.
      As part of my introduction to his first entry, I'd like to comment on something written in his own introduction. RJ mentions some color he adds to [the board] and states: "...Jae wouldn't have me any other way...". Something our members should know, is that; when we were forming this website (thanx' to all the help from Chad at Naturally Wired ), I told RJ that I desperately wanted him to join the team. At this time I can honestly say; I wouldn't want to have IT any other way. I mean that. Sometimes you meet friends and instantaneously feel like family. RJ's one of those friends. As my brother-from-another-mother; Ardge is nothing less than a class-act in ANY version of a gentleman's due respect.
      There are a couple other likely participants to arrive with contribution(s) to this section, and I will certainly join-in on the fun as well! I even had RJ in mind for this idea from the beginning. Thanx' again, bro'! If anybody reading this would like to participate, feel free to contact us for details. You're all welcome, and guests' participation is encouraged.
      It's likely no big secret that we're fans of the crappy-cult chEEzE-ball classic wastes-of-time films and B-horror flix', etc., but sometimes there'll be a Quality Flik' in the mix as well (like "Ginger Snaps" for instance). Links to resources for some of our reviews and where to purchase movies will be added in time, and we're waiting for an affiliate cooperative submission from a place I can't mention yet ('sounds like: "Blah-Hoo").
      For now; COOK some popcorn (no store-bought-junk, only home-made), and get ready to be exposed to the Real Horror of the theater... which is: why some of these movies were EVER made!

     Thanx' for visiting the site!

~JSV

     Hey! How are ya? If you're new to the site, let me introduce myself. My name is RJ, otherwise known as Ardge on our Message Board. (Ardge is a shortened way to say RJ. Go Figure.) I moderate the forum as well as add a touch of weirdness there. Jae wouldn't have me any other way. Speaking of Jae, he and I met on Racer X's Message Board years ago and we INSTANTLY created a strong friendship. I'm in Chicago, he's in Boston, but that doesn't matter. We both are here .... just like you. Anyhow, I was asked a few weeks ago to delve into my extensive horror movie collection and make a "Best Of" list of Movie & DVD recommendations we can use to scare ourselves with during this lovely time of year called Halloween. Well, I just got off my lazy butt and did it. Well, kinda.... I'm doing it now.

     Now, this isn't gonna be the normal, standard, predictable list of spooky movies. We've all seen Friday the 13th and Halloween a gazillon times. (At least I hope you have.) Those movies are a given in my book. In fact, add "The Blair Witch Project" and "Alien" to those to complete the list of 4 movies I never leave the house without…. EVER!

     What we have below is a list that I came up with that are great movies, lesser heard of classics, or movies that will no doubt be classics in the years to come. These are the movies I will be playing for my friends on Halloween...

My first entries are "Ginger Snaps" and "Ginger Snaps 2"

     I LOVE THESE MOVIES!!!! I first saw "Ginger Snaps" about a year ago. It was one of those nights when you watch the TV while you are ½ sleeping. Well, it only took me about 5 minutes to wake up and take notice. I was totally spooked when all was said and done. I tell ya, this movie really has some gross moments. Without spoiling the plot too much, it is about two sisters who are the best of friends and happen to be deeply infatuated with death and horror. They live in a town that is recently plagued by mysterious viscous attacks from a werewolf. One of the sisters falls prey. The rest of the town can only pray.

     This movie is far from cheese. It is incredibly good, wonderfully shot, and awesomely acted. Honestly, this is one of the best horror movies I have bought in recent memory. My only gripe is that the film on the DVD is not presented in widescreen. It is "modified from its original version." I HATE when that happens. :)

     "Ginger Snaps 2" takes place a few years later. It deals with addictions (of all kinds) and is very deep as well as dark. It too is shot beautifully and acted so surprisingly good, it makes me mad to think this was a Direct To Video release. The werewolf is back and meaner than ever. This movie is a roller coaster ride. In fact, the movie takes you places you'd never expect to go. The characters are so well developed, you'd swear you know these people. It's very spooky and it has a great plot. It will very much make you talk after the credits roll. The horror effects in this movie were done by the KNB EFX group. If you're up on your horror, you know these cats are the heavyweights.

     "Ginger Snaps" 1 and 2 are wicked. If you've never seen these movies, see them and you'll see why they are my #1 and #2 picks for your Fright Fix.

     More to come….

Boo!

RJ

All right, here we go... Now we're talkin'
Spooky Devil Movies!   ROCK ON!

"The Prince of Darkness" and "The Prophecy"

     "The Prince of Darkness" is about none other than... You guessed it- The Prince of Darkness. (AKA Satan) This movie is just plain spooky. In my opinion, this is one of John Carpenter's best films. The story is about a church that has secretly guarded the world from Satan himself. I mean this in the literal sense. The basement of the church actually houses a tomb that contains Satan. It has been dormant for centuries. It has been guarded by generations of priests, but something has awaken it ... or has it?
      There's a whole plot about dreams in this movie that freaks me out. So much that I can't even talk (or type) about it. That's about all the plot spoilage you're gonna get from me. There's lots of bugs, zombies, and murders in this movie. Oh yeah, Alice Cooper is in it too. How cool is that? On top of the creepy imagery, John Carpenter's musical score really raises the goose bumps. I wish Mr. Carpenter made movies like this still.

     "The Prophecy" is one of my all-time favorite films. I'm having trouble giving a description without spoiling the entire plot. What I can say is that this movie is about religion. It is one of the deepest and darkest films I have ever seen. To summarize, the film is about the formation of Hell spawned from a war in Heaven because of God's creation of us, the human race. Christopher Walken plays Gabriel, an angel on a mission. (This is a mission NOT from God.) Eric Stoltz plays an Angel named Simon. He is on Earth protecting what Gabriel is looking for. Viggo Mortensen plays Lucifer and absolutely steals the show. Of all the on screen portrayals of Satan on film, Viggo's interpretation is absolutely astounding as well as blood chilling.

...Now get out there and scare someone!

Boo!

The "Heeby Jeebys"!

"May" and "Session 9"

     "May" is without a doubt one of the world's creepiest films. It is about a young girl named May who has trouble making friends due to an eye abnormality. Her best friend is her porcelain doll. (and I have to tell ya, that doll is creepy as heck!) As the years pass, May grows up to be a beautiful, yet timid woman. She's successful, independent, and rather charming. However, her doll is still her best friend. A crazy turn of events separate May from her doll. Her reality gets twisted..... and that's all I am gonna say.
      This is very much an atmospheric type horror movie. You're gonna be asking yourself, "Where's the blood? Where's the guts? Where's the horror?" Patience my friends. Patience. This movie delivers at the end. ROCK ON!

"Session 9"
     Well, there's not too much I can say about this film in terms of understanding it. It's about as wackily twisted as a psychological horror movie can get. My friends and I STILL argue about this movie. Let me summarize the movie with a few bullet points.

* Spooky
* Alone
* Dark
* Mental Institution
* Condemned
* Possession
* Murder
* Fear
* Lost
* Cold

     I think that sums it up. Hey, that's it. I just got the heeby jeebys. No more talking about "Session 9"!

     By the way, the DVD has a TON of extras. Deleted subplots are included.

     OK, thats it. I'm too scared to type anymore...

God, I love horror movies!

"Hell Night" and "Night of the Demons"

     In a sick and twisted way, I don't think my life would be the same without these two movies. The first being "Hell Night". I must have seen it 500 times. Just hearing the name "Hell Night" conjures up fond memories of the dreaded "BE KIND AND REWIND" sticker. From an outside standpoint, people must have thought I was crazy growing up as a kid. "Why does this kid love being scared so much?" "Why does this kid read Famous Monsters magazine?" "Who buys him this trash?" Well, to answer those questions, I will be as honest as I can. Being scared keeps me on the edge. When I know I am NOT gonna get killed, being scared makes me laugh. I like the tense feeling of not knowing what's coming around the corner. I suspend disbelief as much as I can when watching movies. That's the whole point, isn't it?
      I read Famous Monsters because I was too young to buy Playboy. (However, I did sneak a few peeks from my Dad's stash in his 2nd dresser drawer.) And finally, my Mother bought me my Famous Monsters magazine, most likely from Gennaro's Drug Store on the corner of 87th and Central in Oak Lawn, IL.

     I was 9 or 10 years old when Hell Night was released. I saw it with my cousin who snuck me into the drive-in movies. My life was never the same. I was scared to death, but at the same time, afraid to close my eyes in fear that I might miss something. I was blown away. I also fell madly in love with Linda Blair that night. (Note to people who like looking at legal aged females in sexy Little Red Riding Hood outfits or something -- Linda Blair wears one in the film and has LOTS of cleavage to show. Yum Yum.)

     When "Night of the Demons" was released, I think I was just going into my Freshman year of high school. How old are you when you start high school? 15? 16? I forget. This movie, via VHS tape rented from my local video store, served as entertainment for me and my friends many times over.

     Why did I lump these two films together? Well, simply because they are sorta the same. They both have to do with young people spending the night in a place they shouldn't be. Doing this on a dare or a passing a rite of passage matters not. If you trespass in a spooky place, bad stuff happens.... ESPECIALLY if the place is inhabited by deformed ghoul guys or Satanic spirits that posses hot girls named Linnea Quigley. That said, one is classic. One is cheese. I'm not telling what is what. Both deserve a time slot in your spooky movie schedule this year.

     OK, I'll give you a hint on the cheese thing; The film with "of the" in the middle of "Night" and "Demons" is the triple Gorgonzola one.

PS - Gorgonzola is a type of cheese.

     OK, youze can stop reading, cuz I'm done typing...... for now.

Who wants to see blood and guts and brains and stuff?

Look no further than...

"The Prowler" and "Maniac "

     In the 80's, before all the CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) stuff, if you were a director and you wanted someone's brains splattered on something (and you didn't want to serve life with no parole), you called Tom Savini. Mr. Savini is best known for his work on "Friday the 13th", "Dawn of the Dead", "Day of the Dead", and "Creepshow". He is the KING of splatter. In my opinion, there are two lesser known gems that stand out from all the rest. The first is "The Prowler". This movie is SCARY! It's about a jilted lover who takes revenge and makes lots of people dead. Good, gross fun. Very bloody and very graphic. The DVD is unrated as well. HOW COOL IS THAT???

     The second is a movie called "Maniac". Remember Mr. Gazzo from Rocky? "How come you didn't break this guy's thumb like I asked ya?" That guy. Well, he went from slimeball loanshark, to slimeball serial killer. "Maniac" is a nice name for him. Honest to God, this is the sickest (and most fun) horror film I have. This is the definition of "slasher film." Random killings are abound. I've had people say that they've never seen anything like this before. I agree. This is one movie that is in a class by itself. By the way, you'll cheer the ending. Trust me. What goes around, comes around. (Did I spoil it? I hope not.) Check it out if you dare. By the way, don't eat pizza during it. In fact, don't eat anything during it. It is best viewed on an empty stomach.

     Horror movies RAWK, don't you agree?

"House of 1000 Corpses" and "Motel Hell"

"House of 1000 Corpses"

     When I talk about classic horror movies, I'm talking about movies that ring true each and every time I watch them. They hit on all the right themes, and are cranked to 11 while doing so. Now, as you can see, I dig horror. I dig it a lot. But, it takes more than just stage blood and "stingers" to make me want to watch it more than once. It's got to have a story that is maybe kinda sorta on the edge of being semi-believable.

     ...Please meet, "House of 1000 Corpses".
      This is Rob Zombie's gift to all us horror fans. He wrote and directed this perfect roller coaster horror film. I just can't believe how good it is. It has all the elements working for it, including #115 (thanks to this review on our mesage board). :)
      This movie starts off creepy and goes to insane within the first 30 minutes. Then it gets weird. Really weird. It is about two young couples who are traveling across country to see and document "the weird stuff ya see when you're driving cross country." Well, once they found what they deem the weirdest, the even weirder finds them… There's tons of blood, tons of gore, lots of laughs, pretty girls, great camera angles, fuzzy lens filter effects, and tons of great acting and dialog. The believable part is the whole twisted family theme. You can totally see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre influence. This sure is a great movie.

     I first saw this movie with my guitarist John and his wife Dawn. They are my horror movie watching buddies. I bought the DVD when it was released just based on hearing all the buzz surrounding the film when it was in the theater. After seeing it, my jaw was on the floor. In fact, ALL of our jaws were on the floor. This became an instant classic to us that night. I can't wait for Halloween. It's been like 3 weeks since I've seen this movie. I don't think I can wait any more! That's it! I'm gonna watch it before my next review. I need my Dr. Satan fix!

     Coming to a theater near you - "The Devil's Rejects" - (House of 1000 Corpses PART 2)

Rawk Onward!

     "Motel Hell"

"It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent Fritters."

     This review is gonna be quick….
     Motel Hell is AWESOME!!!!!! It's about a guy who owns a roadside motel. When you check in, he drugs ya, plants ya in the garden, then makes Farmer Vincent Fritters out of you. CLASSIC INDEED!!! The guy serves you as free jerky treats in a bowl on his front desk! You're right next to the bell!!!! The guy is NUTS!!!

     I first saw this movie when it was on HBO or Showtime back in the early 80's. I remember I didn't sleep for like 3 months afterwards. It scared me to death!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!

     Hey, if you're still on the edge of taking me up on this recommendation, let me also tell you that 'Cliff' from Cheers is in it, as well as the one and only…. Wolfman Jack!

     OK, NO RUNNING! NO RUNNING PLEASE. THERE'S ENOUGH COPIES FOR US ALL! PLEASE! PLEASE! SINGLE FILE! NO SHOVING!!!!

Why I oughta…..

"The Thing" and "Ginger Snaps Back"

"The Thing"

SURVIVAL TERROR FROM OUTER SPACE. That's all I am gonna say...

     Well, I lied. I am gonna say more actually.

     This movie is one of the most blood chilling movies ever made. This is John Carpenter's remake of the classic film of the same title. It's about a group of researchers in Antarctica who unluckily unearth an alien lifeform that was buried deep under the ice. The old saying, 'It is best to let sleeping dogs lie" is very much fitting for this film. I'm not gonna spoil the entire movie, but let's just say the newly awaken alien thing is very very VERY unfriendly.

     By the way, there has never been a sequel to the film, but there is a continuation of the story in a game called "The Thing" available on XBOX. Call me a wimp, but I can't play this game at night.

"Ginger Snaps Back"

     This is the third film in the Ginger Snaps series. It is the prequel to the story. The two sisters, Brigitte and Ginger, are back but shown in previous lifetime. It shows the beginning of their relationship or "curse" with the werewolf. After being attacked by a werewolf, the two sisters take refuge in a fort manned by soldiers who are in uncharted territory -- a territory that is very close to the werewolf's nest. The costumes and settings are mind blowing. The acting is 1st rate, and the dialog is smart as ever. The story is nothing less than amazing.

     -And oh yeah, there's some good gore too.

     The Ginger Snaps Trilogy is now a staple in my horror collection. I trust it will be in yours as well once you see them. They are true diamonds in the rough.

Leave the lights on,

RJ
